Delays
There is a high demand in registering new enforcement cases. Your report will be registered and you will receive an acknowledgement letter once the case has been set up.
What you can report
You can report:
- a development without planning permission
- a development not built to agreed permission
- an unauthorised change of use
- unauthorised works to a listed building
- an advert that needs consent
- unauthorised works to a tree with a tree preservation order
- a breach of planning permission conditions
What you cannot report
The following are not classed as planning breaches and we will not investigate:
- neighbour disputes - unless there is a clear planning issue that has a significant impact on relations
- boundary disputes
- investigation of land ownership
- party wall disputes
- noise complaints
- health and safety on building sites
- anonymous complaints
- building regulations
- building of scaffolding
- parking issues on the highway
Before you contact us
Check if the work has planning permission
Before you report something, you must check if the work already has planning permission. You can do this by
searching for the property on Public Access external link.
Check if the work is permitted development
Some work can be done without planning permission, for example, due to limited height or size. This is called permitted development. Check to see if the work is permitted development
using the interactive guides on the Planning Portal external link.

We do not accept anonymous reports but your details are kept confidential.
What happens next
We will contact the person responsible for the work and arrange to visit the site. If you have told us that the alleged breach is having a negative effect on you or nearby property, we may also visit you.
We aim to start investigating within ten working days, and will try and resolve any planning breaches by discussion and negotiation. Serious breaches, such as threats to
listed buildings or
protected trees will be investigated immediately.
If we do not take action we will let you know the reasons why.
