Queensway Primary School

Leeds City Council is consulting on a new proposal to close Queensway Primary School at the end of the academic year in July 2025.

The consultation will run from 20 January 2025 until 9 February 2025. During this time there will be public consultation sessions to find out more, ask questions and share your views with the Local Authority (LA), including suggestions or alternative plans you would like the LA to consider. Your views will help us shape the next important steps and so we encourage you to talk to us during the consultation.

It is important to note that no decisions have yet been made and that the consultation is an opportunity for the LA to listen and consider the many different perspectives that parents and carers, staff, governors, residents and other stakeholders with an interest in the school want to share with us.

Why we are proposing this

As a local authority we fully recognise the tireless work of the headteacher and leadership team, governors and staff, to improve Queensway's position since the previous consultation to close the school in 2022. However, with an increasingly challenging budget position and very low numbers of 4 and 5-year-olds living in the area, the school's financial sustainability is at risk along with its ability to deliver its intended provision and curriculum offer. Additionally, the Department for Education has been unable to identify a suitable academy trust to take on (sponsor) the school.

Therefore, the council has a responsibility to revisit the future viability of the school and ask the school and wider community for views on its possible closure.

Public consultation

The consultation will be open from Monday 20 January 2025 until 4pm on Sunday 9 February 2025.

Consultation sessions

There will be two public consultation sessions as follows:

• Monday 27 January 6pm to 7:30pm - an in-person meeting at Queensway Primary School
• Thursday 30 January 2pm to 3pm - an online session
