'Friends of' groups

You can volunteer in our green spaces and parks as part of a group or even create your own group.

A 'Friends of' group is a group of people who voluntarily work to maintain, improve and promote parks and green spaces.

The groups make positive contributions by:

  • developing good relationships with landowners to improve the way the site is managed
  • doing practical work to improve the area, such as footpath management or bulb planting
  • fundraising for improvements to a site to pay for things like benches
  • bringing together local communities by holding events like fun days
  • promoting the green spaces across Leeds

Setting up your own 'Friends of' group

First, let the landowner or site manager know about your plan. If we own the site, you can call us on 0113 378 6002 or email parks@leeds.gov.uk email link to find out who the site manager is.

Start to think about what you want your Friends of group to achieve and how (such as organising events and fundraising). The decision about the aims of the group will be up to the members once the group is set up, but it’s good to have a basic plan when getting started.

Advertise any event as widely as possible through things like putting posters up on site and in local shops, setting up a group or event on social media or contacting local radio and newspapers. This will help bring in new members and bring together local communities.

Make sure membership is fun, remember, membership is voluntary so it shouldn’t feel too much like hard work. Try to make the atmosphere of meetings, events and tasks relaxed and welcoming.

Once you have set up your group and have enough members to help develop it further, you need to arrange the first formal meeting. Meetings should generally include:

  • agreeing the aims of the group
  • setting goals and prioritising these
  • electing a committee
  • writing a constitution
  • planning fundraising events such as coffee mornings
  • planning tasks and group activities to maintain the site

Once the committee and constitution are in place you can work towards achieving your group aims and objectives.

If you need help writing the constitution for your group, email us email link and we can send examples from other Friends of groups.

Most friends groups find mutual support by joining the Leeds Parks and Green Spaces Forum and group of over 100 members who aim to work in partnership with the council to protect, preserve and enhance the parks and green spaces of Leeds for the benefit of people and wildlife.

The council are members of the National Federation of Cemetery Friends (NFCF). Objectives include increased promotion, appreciation, preservation and conservation of cemeteries. They support all our "cemetery friends of" groups with networking opportunities external to Leeds.
