The Trans Pennine Trail external link is a route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders linking from coast to coast between Southport and Hornsea.

The trail starts near to the city centre by the Royal Armouries and follows a green corridor along the banks of the River Aire and Aire-Calder Navigation for seven miles to the village of Mickletown. Here a short, two mile on-road section leads through the historic village of Methley before the trail picks up a disused mineral railway line path leading into Wakefield district.
Along the way, there is plenty of wildlife to see along the river and canal sides, including kingfishers, cormorants and terns. Thwaite Mills Industrial Museum is on the route and as well as canal boats and locks.
Rothwell and St. Aidan’s Country Parks are also to be enjoyed along the trail.
