New York Road flyover and Marsh Lane

Find out about the closure of New York Road tunnel and diversions starting 12 February 2024.

The New York Road tunnel and the A64(M) slip road exit to the tunnel will be completely closed to all traffic from 12 February until autumn 2024.

This is to allow us to undertake essential emergency maintenance works to the New York Road flyover, with clearly signed diversion routes in place.

The cycle route on Marsh Lane that runs underneath the New York Road flyover will remain open.

The A64(M) will remain open during the maintenance works.

Works involved

The project involves the replacement of 27 bridge bearings on New York Road flyover.

The flyover will be temporarily lifted at each bearing location, requiring significant temporary works with heavy equipment, including the installation of foundations to support the bridge until a bearing is replaced.

To ensure the structural integrity of the bridge, the work must be carefully phased, and certain main bridge girders will undergo strengthening. At the same time, some steelwork paint repairs will be conducted, but this will not extend the duration of the works.

Initially only lane closures were planned, however, the tunnel closure became necessary due to traffic flow disruption concerns, safety concerns, and the potential for accidents. The tunnel closure offers several benefits over lane closures for these works, including quicker completion, improved safety, and enhanced working conditions for the workforce.

The main benefits of the tunnel closure instead of lane closures include:

  • improving the safety of road users
  • the scheme aiming to be complete approximately one month sooner
  • being able to avoid 50 night closures of New York Road tunnel and the noise associated with this
  • having the opportunity to switch between construction phases if any issues are encountered
  • significantly improving the working conditions of the workforce, who would otherwise be exposed to constant noise and exhaust fumes from queuing traffic
