If your unwanted items are not suitable for donation and you cannot get to a recycling centre, you can book an unwanted items collection.
If you live within the Leeds council tax area:
- we can collect up to 5 items per collection
- you can have a maximum of 4 collections per year
Every household is entitled to one free collection per financial year (April to March) and a further 3 collections per year can be booked at a cost of £30 per collection with payment by credit or debit card.
This service is only available for private residents and cannot be used by landlords or businesses.
Households in receipt of council tax support
Households who are in receipt of council tax support can receive up to 4 collections per year free of charge. You will need to have your council tax account number to hand when making your booking online. Please use your number even when making your first booking of the year.
Low income households who are exempt from paying council tax
Households who do not pay council tax, but meet the criteria below may also be eligible for 4 free collections if:
- you get universal credit and do not pay council tax
- you are entitled to the severe mental impairment council tax exemption and receive Housing Benefit
- every person living in the property is under the age of 18

Check what items we can take
Carpets and underlay
Carpets and underlay must be kept dry and, if possible, folded or rolled into manageable pieces for easier carrying.
Please separate the carpet from the underlay.
No loose pieces of carpet will be collected.
Doors
We can collect any internal or external doors, except for those made of UPVC.
Any glass panels must be removed and made safe by taping.
We will not collect garage doors
Electrical items
Loose doors or wires should be taped or tied to the item.
We will collect electrical items including:
- TVs
- microwaves
- lawn mowers
- sun beds (UV tubes removed)
- fridges and freezers (these must be smaller than 6 by 4 feet, with all food removed)
- cookers
- washing machines
- tumble dryers
- dish washers
Furniture
We will collect:
- chairs
- sofas
- tables
- dismantled wardrobes
- sideboards
- bed bases
- mattresses
All items must be dismantled prior to collection. Each part of the dismantled object will be classed as one item. For example, a bed will consist of 4 items - bed frame, slats, mattress and headboard. Make sure there are no nails sticking out.
Any drawers should be left intact.
Any items containing glass should have the glass removed, or if this is not possible, should have cardboard taped securely on either side.
Mirrors or items containing mirrors will not be collected, such as wardrobes with a mirror attached
Garden waste and wood
Garden waste
We will not collect garden waste if you have access to brown (garden waste) bin collections.
We will take up to 5 items or 4 bags of
garden waste that would normally go in a brown bin. Bags must be double bagged.
Wood and branches
Wood and branches must be bundled up into manageable amounts.
Please make sure that nails and screws are removed.
Each fence panel and each fence post will be classed as one item.
What we do not collect
- tree trunks
- broken up pallets
- broken up garden sheds
- fence panels larger than 2 meters by 1.3 metres
Items we do not collect
We cannot collect any items larger than 6 feet by 4 feet
- garden sheds
- bathroom suites including sinks, baths and toilets
- kitchen units including sinks, worktops and cupboards
- boilers, storage heaters and radiators
- building material including rubble
- car parts including batteries and tyres
- gas bottles
- hazardous materials such as chemicals, paint and asbestos
- glass items including mirrors, greenhouses, fish tanks and fluorescent lights
- pianos and organs
- hot tubs
- window frames and windows
- general household waste that would normally go into
your black or green bin
The above items can be taken to any
recycling centre apart from asbestos (make an appointment at
Kirkstall recycling centre) and gas bottles -

Check the rules for collection before you book
- collections may be made any time between 7am and 5pm on the day of collection
- we will only collect from occupied properties to ensure that items are kept dry, placed out for collection at the agreed time, and to prevent fly tipping
- the crew will only take the items listed on your original booking -
contact us at least 6 working days before your booking to make changes
- items that are excessively soiled, rotten or hazardous to the health of the collection crew will not be taken
- if an item cannot be collected for any reason, our collection crew may take photographs for audit purposes

You can book up to 4 weeks in advance. If there are no appointments available, check the form each day (Monday to Saturday) or dispose of unwanted items for free at one of our
household waste recycling centres.

Prepare your items for collection
Items must be:
- left outdoors within your property boundary before 7am on collection day
- dry - items made of material that can absorb water should be covered with waterproof sheeting
- made safe - nails and screws should be removed, any doors and loose wires taped up, any items containing glass or Perspex should have the glass removed, or if this is not possible, should have cardboard taped securely on either side
- dismantled - each part of a dismantled item will be classed as one item, for example a bed will consist of 4 items: bed frame, slats, mattress and headboard
- able to be moved safely by two people - any item that is too large or too heavy will not be collected
- easy to get to, for example no locked gates, no cars on the drive or dogs loose in the garden
We will not collect any item where a car is parked on a drive due to the risk of damage to the vehicle.
We will not collect items from inside a property. This includes garages, outhouses and communal areas.
You can make changes to a booking up to 7 working days before the collection date, or cancel a booking up to 48 hours before the collection date.
Use the online form to cancel or make changes to your booking.
You will need the reference number from the original booking.
Missed collections
If your items are not collected on your booking date, please leave them in the location given during your booking for a further 48 hours.
The crew may not collect your items if you haven't followed the rules for collection on this page. If this is the case, you will need to make a new booking.
If you have followed the rules, please contact us after 48 hours have passed.
